McLaren driver Lando Norris retired from the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, June 7, 2026, after a terminal power unit failure forced his car out of the race on lap 45.

The retirement marked the second consecutive race failure for the reigning Formula 1 World Champion, following a mechanical retirement caused by gearbox troubles at the previous round in Canada.

Norris started from eighth on the grid and spent his opening stint trapped behind Pierre Gasly before noticing a severe loss of power through the Monaco tunnel.

"Look, I'm fighting for P8 and Gasly has a penalty now.

This was my chance to be there and get a few points," said Norris, as reported by formula1.

The British driver expressed frustration that despite massive efforts from himself and the McLaren crew, unexpected mechanical failures continue to cost the team vital championship points.

"At this point of the year we're not expecting a win or a podium but we need to maximise sixth, seventh, fifth – little points along the way and they all add up.

I'm working hard, the team are working hard and we're just not getting rewarded. We're just being unlucky," said Norris.

McLaren attempted to deploy a mid-race electronic fix to alleviate the engine noise, but the modification worsened the issue, forcing engineers to revert the changes before the car ultimately failed.

"Some of it's our fault, some of it's failures, some of it's just being unlucky.
