Amazon delivery drivers are reporting that a recent software update on Rivian-built electric vans disables the air conditioning when the rear sliding door remains open for more than 30 seconds.

The change affects drivers who frequently stop and open the door to deliver packages, sometimes dozens of times on a single block.

According to a report from 404Media, several drivers have complained about the update, saying it leaves them sweating in hot climates.

Amazon's Explanation

Amazon responded to inquiries about the update, stating that the software actually extends climate control for drivers.

“Rivian recently released a software update for Electric Delivery Vehicles that actually extends climate control for drivers,” Amazon said.

“As a result, the AC now runs for up to 10 minutes after a driver exits the vehicle, ensuring a cool cabin when they return.

The timer resets at every stop.

The AC only shuts off if the driver's sliding door is left open for more than 30 seconds — a battery conservation measure.”

The company likely aims to prevent power waste from cooling the cabin while the door is open, letting hot air in.

However, drivers find the feature frustrating, especially when making multiple deliveries on the same block, forcing them to repeatedly open and close the door or risk losing AC.

Amazon noted that newer Rivian vans also include ventilated seats to help drivers during summer.

It remains unclear whether Amazon will address the complaints further.

After publication, Amazon clarified to Carscoops that its delivery drivers are employed by Delivery Service Partners, which set their own routes.

It also noted that in-van safety cameras record no audio, are reviewed only after a specific safety event, and can be switched off during breaks.
