Executive producer Liz Heldens echoed these sentiments to TV Insider, noting that both Wagner and Seth, played by Scott Foley, were eliminated to usher in new narrative trajectories for the upcoming fifth season.
"Going into Season 5, it just really felt like we needed a reset and some new energy, and some new dynamics… These were really hard and emotional decisions for the writers.
There was a lot of back and forth in the room, but, eventually, we did what we thought was best for the future of the show.
But yeah, both of them are heartbreakers for sure," said Liz Heldens, executive producer.
Heldens also discussed the possibility of the character appearing in alternative narrative forms, such as visions or memories, which the series has utilized in past storylines involving deceased figures.
"That's always a little comforting that we have a mechanism by which we could bring people back if Will needs to work something out," said Liz Heldens, cocreator.
Following her character's death, Sohn briefly reappeared in a dream sequence portrayed by actress Sydney Park as a younger version of Wagner.
Sohn has promised to share more behind-the-scenes context in the future but urged audiences to move forward: "let old girl go."
