The first day of NHL free agency on July 2, 2026, saw several teams aggressively reshape their rosters through trades and signings.

Sharks Bolster Defense

The San Jose Sharks focused on strengthening their blue line. They signed veteran defenseman Jacob Trouba, 32, to a four-year contract worth $8.25 million annually.

San Jose also acquired defenseman Darnell Nurse from the Edmonton Oilers. In exchange, Edmonton received defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin and prospect forward Zack Sharp.

Nurse has three seasons remaining on an eight-year, $74 million contract with a $9.25 million annual cap hit.

Additionally, the Sharks signed winger Mason Marchment to a five-year, $33.75 million deal.

Capitals Add Scoring Depth

The Washington Capitals made multiple roster adjustments to upgrade their finishing ability.

After pre-free-agency moves that brought in Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch, Washington added veterans Boone Jenner, Vincent Desharnais, and Justin Holl.

Kings Go for Experience

The Los Angeles Kings took a different approach by adding significant experience.

General Manager Ken Holland signed four players with an average age of 34: Erik Haula, Corey Perry, Mats Zuccarello, and Scott Laughton.

Werenski Stays in Columbus

Trade speculation cooled in Columbus as defenseman Zach Werenski agreed to remain with the team. Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell clarified the internal discussions.

"Indicated that he wasn't sure what the future would hold with regard to staying with the club or possibly moving on," Waddell said.

Management had initially explored trade opportunities that would satisfy both the organization and the player's family.

"During those discussions, we talked about me exploring opportunities to move him now and we all agreed that if there was a deal to be made, I would bring it to him," Waddell said.
