Flash flood warnings were issued for parts of New York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey on Monday as severe storms moved through the region, abruptly ending a heat dome that had settled over much of the Northeast.

The storm system, which traveled eastward from Michigan, left approximately 450,000 residents without power, according to data from poweroutage.

The transition from intense heat to heavy rainfall has created hazardous conditions across metropolitan areas, and emergency management teams are monitoring flood risks associated with the sudden deluge.

Officials Urge Caution Amid Flooding and Heat-Related Deaths

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued safety warnings on Monday, urging residents to immediately vacate basement apartments if they notice water levels rising.

These instructions follow prior efforts by the mayor on Sunday to inform the public about cooling centers and public pools to mitigate the impacts of extreme temperatures.

In New Jersey, state officials are investigating approximately 25 deaths potentially related to the intense heat.

New Jersey Department of Health Commissioner Raynard Washington stated that the deceased, ranging in age from their 30s to their 80s, were found either in homes without air conditioning or on the street.

Washington indicated that autopsies and detailed investigations are necessary to officially determine if heat was the definitive cause.

No other states have reported similar potential heat-related fatalities at this time.

The region experienced record-breaking temperatures leading up to the storms.
