The United Nations has issued a red alert over the strategic Sudanese city of El Obeid, warning of an imminent humanitarian catastrophe as paramilitary forces intensify their siege.
According to a report by The Guardian, the UN raised alarms over tightening near-siege conditions, persistent drone strikes, and the mobilization of the Rapid Support Forces around the North Kordofan capital.

“This is not a drill. It is a red alert,” said Volker Türk, UN rights chief, describing the situation as “running hot.”
The protracted war in Sudan has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced 15 million citizens over three years, driven by uncompromising military ambitions of opposing generals and sustained by foreign interests in local resources.

The escalating situation draws stark comparisons to the Darfur genocide two decades ago, highlighting past international failures in preventing mass atrocities.
