A severe tropical storm has killed two people, breached dams, and forced tens of thousands to evacuate in southern China, according to The Guardian.

Typhoon Maysak caused two fatalities in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi province. Deputy Mayor Wei Jiang said Monday that floods affected about 55,000 people in the city.

Floodwaters breached or overflowed barriers at a minimum of three local reservoirs. Emergency officials raised the flood control response to its highest level.

Authorities warned that impending heavy rainfall could worsen the situation and hinder rescue operations.

In Guigang, about 170 miles away, rising waters turned a major road into a lake, submerging vehicles.

The Ministry of Water Resources said the water level at Guigang hydrological station reached 42 meters by 12:30 PM.

Footage from Fangchenggang showed a small car being swept away, and a man struggling to save his electric scooter.

Maysak made landfall in Hainan on Friday, the first tropical cyclone to hit mainland China this year.

It then struck Vietnam on Sunday, damaging trees and roofs in Mong Cai before crossing back into China.

Meanwhile, China is on alert for Super Typhoon Bavi, moving across the Pacific toward Taiwan. Bavi brought winds of 180 mph over Guam and other islands.

Xinhua reported that Bavi is expected to bring powerful winds and torrential rains to eastern China starting Thursday.

Meteorologists link these extreme weather events to the climate crisis.
