Vasectomy numbers are rising across Australia, reflecting a shift in men's attitudes toward contraception and family planning.

Medicare data reveals that the number of vasectomies performed annually jumped from 22,230 in 2015 to 36,317 in 2025.

Dr. Nikolas Katelaris, a procedural GP in Sydney, has observed a clear increase in demand for the procedure.

He attributes this trend to men taking greater responsibility for contraception and the financial strain of raising large families.

“A lot of it is that men are taking more responsibility for their part in the contraceptive burden,” Katelaris said.

“People are realizing that having a big family is expensive... It would be naive to think that that’s not part of what’s driving it.”

Who Is Getting Vasectomies?

The primary demographic remains men in their 30s and 40s who already have children.

For them, a vasectomy offers a reliable alternative to other birth control methods, typically performed in clinics under local anesthesia.

However, Katelaris has also seen a rise in younger men seeking the procedure, a trend he finds concerning.

The overall reversal rate for vasectomies is 2.4%, but it jumps to 11.1% among men aged 20 to 24.

He stresses that younger men should carefully consider their long-term family plans before making a decision.
