The average electric vehicle on Chinese roads is less than two years old, making it younger than many smartphones.

According to a report from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Hejun Consulting, cited by Bloomberg, the typical EV in China is just 1.8 years old.

In contrast, the average combustion car in the country is about 8.2 years old.

Across all powertrains, the typical vehicle in China is under 7 years old, compared to 12.8 years in the United States.

Why Chinese EVs Are Replaced So Quickly

Electric vehicles only surged in popularity after 2021, reaching a 60 percent penetration rate of the new car market by 2026.

This rapid growth naturally keeps the average age low.

A white paper last year found that 70 percent of fuel-powered vehicles in China stay with their owners for more than five years.

However, Sohu reports that 90 percent of new energy vehicles, including EVs, are replaced within five years.

The main reason is that EVs now behave more like tech products. Batteries, electric motors, electronic controls, self-driving systems, and onboard technologies have developed rapidly.

An EV launched just three years ago may feel outdated compared to a new model.

Additionally, the development cycle of EVs is much faster in China than for internal combustion engine vehicles, allowing manufacturers to introduce all-new models more quickly.
