Federal health officials are investigating a widespread cyclospora parasite outbreak across the United States that has caused 1,645 confirmed illnesses as of Tuesday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 145 hospitalizations and a backlog of 5,100 additional cases requiring analysis.

The outbreak spans multiple states, including Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Authorities are scouring the food supply chain for a contaminated source.

Gwen Biggerstaff, deputy director of the CDC’s division of foodborne, waterborne, and environmental diseases, addressed the spike in infections during a media briefing.

She noted that the true number of infections is almost certainly higher because many people with mild illness recover.

Biggerstaff said the current summer season has seen an unprecedented surge in cyclosporiasis tracking.

She also explained that regional health authorities face financial constraints while managing the ongoing public health response.

Despite these resource limitations, federal assets remain fully committed to supporting local tracking efforts.

Biggerstaff emphasized that a significant portion of infected individuals remain unrecorded due to a lack of medical testing.

Donald Prater, the acting deputy commissioner for food at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), described the scientific difficulties associated with identifying this specific parasite.

He confirmed that federal food safety investigators are systematically reviewing trace-back data compiled by other agencies.

In Michigan, where state officials reported more than 2,800 illnesses due to reporting differences, regional authorities on Monday identified a specific commodity as a primary suspect.

Years prior to the current crisis, historical CDC reports emphasized the critical necessity of systemic upgrades within national agricultural oversight.

Subsequent data from the agency suggested that higher statistical trends might stem from enhanced laboratory protocols rather than true increases in the number of cases.
