English Championship side Middlesbrough is finalizing a $2 million transfer deal to acquire United States national team midfielder Sebastian Berhalter from Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps.
The 25-year-old was held out of Vancouver's 4-3 loss to FC Cincinnati on July 22, with official reports listing him as out not due to injury amid advanced contract negotiations.

Berhalter's contract with the Whitecaps was set to expire in December.
Middlesbrough moved to secure the transfer this summer rather than risk losing him on a free transfer in the winter window.
Between six and ten European clubs seriously pursued the midfielder, but Middlesbrough successfully presented its project under manager Kim Hellberg to convince Berhalter, according to reports from Teesside Live and The Athletic.
The move reunites Berhalter with USMNT teammate and close friend Aidan Morris, who joined Middlesbrough earlier from Columbus Crew.
The Teesside club has increasingly focused on the American market, having also signed defender Adilson Malanda from MLS.

He developed into a key player, earning MLS Best XI honors in 2025 and an MLS All-Star selection in 2026.
He totaled 20 goals and 26 assists across 167 appearances for the Canadian club.
On the international stage, Berhalter earned 18 caps for the United States after making his debut in 2025.
