Microsoft is piloting a smart download client in an Xbox system update preview designed to reduce game installation and update times.
The feature dynamically selects and switches to the fastest available content server pool during downloads, according to Microsoft's release notes.
How the Smart Download Client Works
The client checks which content servers are available for a game install or update shortly after the download begins.
It then tests the connection speed to each server pool and selects the fastest available connection for that install.
The speed test reruns periodically during the download to ensure the client continues using the fastest connection.
The feature is currently available to Xbox Insider testers in the experimental Alpha Skip-Ahead ring, introduced in OS Version XB_FLT_2608GE26100.9400.260719-2200.
Microsoft stated the new system aims to address inconsistent download speeds across Xbox consoles.
Beyond server optimization, the latest system preview also fixes a bug where specific game and application updates failed to complete installation.
Microsoft has not announced a timeline for releasing the smart download feature to the general public or bringing similar functionality to PC gaming environments.
