Seven UK water utility companies have enacted or announced temporary hosepipe bans across England as sustained heat and dry conditions push public demand up to 30 percent above normal levels.
The mandatory restrictions, also known as Temporary Use Bans, aim to protect strained reservoirs and treatment facilities.

Major suppliers including Thames Water and Affinity Water have placed millions of residents under the order, prohibiting non-essential outdoor uses such as garden watering, car washing, filling pools, and operating sprinklers.
According to regional water authorities, the restrictions will remain in effect indefinitely until regional water supplies recover and consumer usage stabilizes.
Exemptions exist for animal welfare, health and safety needs, commercial activities, and customers with severe mobility issues or health conditions.
Criticism and Defense
Environmental advocacy groups and impacted residents have directed scrutiny toward corporate water management.
Greenpeace UK stated that water firms in England and Wales lose approximately five times more water through network pipe leaks than a full nationwide hosepipe ban would save.
Thames Water defended its maintenance efforts while appealing to the public for cooperation.
"While there is enough water for essential use, we need to reduce non-essential outdoor demand to keep taps flowing," said Thames Water.
The company noted a 15.1 percent reduction in leakage compared to its 2019 baseline, emphasizing that infrastructure crews are working continuously to maintain supply lines and address leaks.
