Rangers are on the verge of completing a £3 million ($4 million) deal to sign Philadelphia Union defender Olwethu Makhanya, as manager Derek McInnes looks to strengthen his backline ahead of the Scottish Premiership season opener against Dundee United on Friday night.
The 22-year-old South Africa international, who was an unused substitute in his country's World Cup squad, has been a target for Ibrox executives throughout the summer transfer window.
With John Souttar expected to leave before the window closes, Ben Godfrey and Emmanuel Fernandez are currently the only natural central defenders available in McInnes' squad, making Makhanya's arrival crucial for defensive depth.
Additional Transfer Activity
In addition to Makhanya, Rangers have opened formal negotiations for 21-year-old Brighton winger Amario Cozier-Duberry after the Premier League side rejected a £5 million bid from Anderlecht.
However, any potential arrival will not happen before Friday's match.
Former Rangers manager Danny Rohl, now at RB Salzburg, along with West Ham and Hull City, are also monitoring Cozier-Duberry.
Rangers are weighing up a permanent transfer or a season-long loan deal.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old midfielder Paul Nsio is set to sign a new contract extension with Rangers before moving on loan to fellow Premiership side St Mirren for regular first-team experience.
