A 39-year-old California sailor stranded in the Pacific Ocean was rescued alive on July 21, 2026, roughly 900 miles off Hawaii after spending over a month adrift.
Kai Sato set sail from Catalina Island on June 7, but his vessel's mast snapped two weeks into his trip.

Sato lost primary navigation when his phone died, and efforts to return using the boat's engine failed after running out of fuel.
Left at the mercy of ocean currents, he began drifting south off course.
"I cried for a whole week, just drifting south, like miserable," said Kai Sato.
The navigator eventually rigged makeshift sails utilizing kayak paddles and PVC pipes to maneuver toward commercial shipping lanes.
After his fresh water supply ran out on July 11, Sato constructed a condensation system using plastic bags over buckets of seawater.
"I felt like I was going to just try to turn my motor on and just suffocate, to kill myself, I felt hopeless," said Kai Sato.
Sato survived by eating oatmeal alongside fish and squid that landed on his boat deck while collecting small amounts of drinking water.

"I was literally like a sitting duck, just getting taken south by the current going way off course," said Kai Sato.
He continued using his condensation setup to gather daily moisture needed to survive in open waters.
