The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has activated the National Heat Plan for four Dutch provinces starting Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
The decision follows weather forecasts predicting temperatures up to 35 degrees Celsius.

The plan applies to the provinces of Brabant, Limburg, Gelderland, and Overijssel.
According to the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, the highest temperatures will occur locally in the southeastern regions on Wednesday.
This activation marks the third time the National Heat Plan has taken effect this year.
The RIVM uses automated heat alert emails to notify healthcare workers, caregivers, and relevant organizations about rising temperatures.

Protecting Vulnerable Groups
The system allows providers to implement protective measures for vulnerable populations, particularly elderly residents over 75 and young children.
Officials warn that unmitigated exposure to extreme heat can cause fatigue, headaches, and concentration issues among these groups.
Severe cases may progress to serious health complications, including dehydration and heatstroke.

The plan also targets individuals with chronic conditions, homeless people, and socially isolated residents to minimize heat-related health risks.
