A 16-year-old rookie lifeguard named Ryder Williams rescued a 10-year-old boy after the child was swept into powerful surf at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California.
The boy had been carried approximately 15 yards offshore by sudden, severe waves before Williams reached him.

The ocean rescue operation lasted just over two minutes as the teenager fought off repeated heavy swells.
Footage of the incident captured multiple beachgoers and a second lifeguard attempting to enter the water to assist, though many were quickly overwhelmed by crashing waves.
Bystander Vander Dussen recorded the scene during the chaotic surge.
"It caught a lot of people off-guard," said Vander Dussen. "Unfortunately, this young man was overwhelmed and swept out in just a moment's time."
Witnesses noted that Williams continually submerged beneath breakers while maintaining a firm hold on the victim.
Following the rescue, the boy was brought to shore, reunited with his family, and checked by emergency medical personnel.
Mother Declines Donations, Calls for Recognition
Responding to public praise and inquiries about establishing a fundraising account, the teenage lifeguard's mother shared a message expressing gratitude while declining direct financial contributions.

"I am blown away by the love, kindness, gratitude and respect you're sending his way!" said Ryder's mother in a social media statement.
She emphasized that her son was performing duties he thoroughly enjoys and advocated for official recognition of beach safety workers.
"A few people have asked about a GoFundMe - but honestly he was just doing the job that he absolutely loves," said Ryder's mother.
She directed well-wishers to support the Santa Cruz County Parks Department's Junior Guards program, where Williams previously completed his training.
She also called for lifeguards along the hazardous Santa Cruz shoreline to be designated as first responders.
"Give this 16-year-old lifeguard the highest civilian honor. This is truly the best of America!
Well done!" said a witness commenting on the rescue video.

President Donald Trump subsequently invited Williams to the White House to receive a high civilian honor following the public release of the rescue footage.
