McMahon eventually ended the affair in March 2018 by changing her phone number.
Five months later, Watts murdered 34-year-old Shanann, who was 15 weeks pregnant, and their daughters Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3, in Frederick, Colorado.
Reflecting on the tragedy, McMahon expressed relief that she escaped harm while recognizing the chilling nature of his actions.
"But I've had years to think about that, and obviously he wanted to have a new life … which is obviously more complex in that aspect," she said.
"He's just sick."
Watts pleaded guilty in November 2018 to avoid the death penalty and is serving five life sentences without parole at the Dodge Correctional Institution in Wisconsin.
