Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the Spezialanfertigung CLE 646, a limited-run coupe that introduces the brand's all-new V8 engine.
Only 30 units will be built, and rumors suggest a price tag around $1 million.
Ford's Mustang GTD is less exclusive but costs less and makes even more power.
Both cars are exotic machines with humble origins, yet they deliver extreme performance and track-focused aerodynamics.
Price and Exclusivity
The AMG CLE 646 is based on the CLE coupe that starts at $60,900, while the Mustang GTD can trace its roots to a $33,490 rental-spec EcoBoost Mustang.
Ford is capping GTD production at 1,700 units, whereas AMG will only make 30 of the 646.
A stock GTD costs around $327,000 before options, and AMG could be asking $1 million for the 646, according to reports.
All 30 CLE 646s have already been snapped up, but the GTD remains available.
Aerodynamics and Design
Both cars hide their humble bones under flared panels, scoops, and wings made from composite materials.
The AMG gains wider carbon front fenders with sawtooth vents, a carbon hood with an intake, and a colossal rear wing.
It generates up to 250 kg (551 lb) of downforce in maximum downforce mode.
The Mustang GTD, in base form, has a small fixed rear spoiler, but the optional Performance Pack adds a giant rear wing with an F1-style Drag Reduction System, front dive planes, a bigger splitter, and underbody aero flaps.
