Japanese reports suggest Toyota is developing a GR GT Aero Top, an open-air version of its upcoming supercar.
The drop-top could feature a manually detachable targa panel or a power-retractable fabric roof.
If approved, the GR GT Aero Top would join the standard coupe and a track-focused variant, expanding the GR GT lineup before deliveries even begin.
Reviving a Classic Name
The Aero Top badge was last used on the A80 Supra in the 1990s, which had a removable hardtop panel.
Reviving it on the GR GT would connect the new flagship to one of Toyota's most iconic sports cars.
According to Japan's Magazine X, Toyota is evaluating a similar setup for the GR GT.
The targa approach minimizes weight and packaging challenges, while a powered fabric roof remains a possibility.
Regardless of roof type, the supercar will retain the aluminum frame and self-charging hybrid powertrain from the coupe.
That system pairs a mid-mounted twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with a rear-mounted electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transaxle.
If produced, the GR GT Aero Top would compete with exotic roadsters like the McLaren Artura Spider, Ferrari 296 GTS, and Lamborghini Temerario Spyder, but at a lower price point.
Its sticker would likely align more with drop-top grand tourers such as the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, Mercedes-AMG SL, Aston Martin Vantage Roadster, and Ferrari Amalfi Spider.
The reported targa joins a widening lineup of GR GT models.
Spy shots from the Nurburgring have revealed a trim with a mild bodykit and a track-focused version with aggressive aero aimed at the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
Magazine X says production for the GR GT family could be capped at around 500 units, matching the Lexus LFA's run.
However, Akio Toyoda previously pushed back on a hard limit for the standard road-going supercar.
The GR GT is expected to arrive in 2027 with an estimated starting price north of $200,000.
