Incumbent Senator John Hickenlooper has won the Colorado Democratic U. S.
Senate primary, defeating challenger Julie Gonzales, according to CBS News projections.
With 70% of votes counted, Hickenlooper, 74, held a comfortable lead at 57.3% compared to Gonzales's 42.7%.
Hickenlooper is seeking a second term in the Senate, a position he has held since 2020. He previously served as Denver mayor and Colorado governor.
The incumbent has stated that if re-elected, this will be his final Senate campaign.
Gonzales, a state senator with a background in immigration law, could not overcome Hickenlooper's lead as results came in Tuesday evening.
Hickenlooper will now advance to the November general election, where he will face Republican nominee Mark Baisley.
Baisley, an aerospace engineer and Colorado state senator, ran unopposed for the Republican nomination.
