An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot an undocumented Mexican national, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, during a targeted enforcement operation in Houston's Magnolia Park neighborhood on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that the incident occurred at approximately 6:50 a. m.
when Salgado Araujo allegedly ignored commands, attempted to evade arrest, and tried to ram an officer with his vehicle, prompting the agent to fire in self-defense.
Houston firefighters reported that Salgado Araujo was shot in the abdomen and later died at a hospital, while his family and lawmakers noted he had no criminal convictions during his decades of living in the United States.
Family's Account and Demands
The victim's son, Ronaldo Salgado, spoke at a press conference on Wednesday morning to demand an independent investigation into the fatal encounter, challenging the official narrative provided by federal authorities.
Salgado explained that his father had lived in the country for over 30 years and was actively completing the legal immigration process through a work permit.
He described his father as a hard-working family man who simply wanted to provide for his wife and sons.
Salgado added that his father was driving a crew of workers to a homebuilding site and suggested that if his father fled, it was likely out of fear of having his tools stolen by unmarked vehicles.
Salgado expressed profound grief over losing the man who instilled core family values and supported his children through higher education.
He emphasized that his father did not deserve to die or be reduced to a headline.
Salgado noted that his father had already completed biometric scanning and fingerprinting earlier in the year as part of his immigration adjustment process.
According to Salgado, three other individuals, including his uncle, were inside the vehicle during the shooting and were subsequently detained by federal agents.
The family has not heard from them since.
Salgado stated he identified his father after recognizing his voice crying for help on a bystander video filmed by Juliet Martinez.
He maintained that his father would have willingly submitted to law enforcement if the agents had clearly identified themselves.
