A 47-year-old Michigan man fatally shot his wife and six children before starting multiple fires inside their home and turning the gun on himself on July 24 in Grand Haven Township, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.
First responders discovered the bodies of Kristopher Karolkiewicz, his 39-year-old wife Amanda Karolkiewicz, and their six children on Friday morning after entering a smoke-filled residence located on the 14900 block of Riverside Trail.
Medical examiners at Corewell Health-Blodgett Hospital performed forensic autopsies and confirmed that all eight family members died from gunshot wounds.
Officials ruled the deaths of Amanda Karolkiewicz and the children as homicides, while Kristopher Karolkiewicz died by suicide.
Authorities identified the six children as four boys, aged 5, 11, 12, and 15, along with two 11-year-old girls.
Family relatives confirmed their names as Keegan, Bennett, Caroline, Ella, Smith, and Teddy. Four of the children were biological and two were adopted.
Several family pets also perished due to the fire and smoke.
Investigators believe the shootings began Thursday evening before extending into Friday morning.
Michigan State Police arson investigators noted that arson fires were intentionally set in various locations throughout the residence, including the basement and first floor, following the fatal shootings.
Investigation and Community Response
Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Capt. Jake Sparks provided details regarding the ongoing investigation into the murder-suicide scene.
"We're trying to get answers about what happened leading up to the incident," said Capt. Jake Sparks.
"We believe this incident could've started the night before and then carried over into the early morning hours.
There were reports of the smell of smoke early in the morning."
Detectives gathered documentation from the scene to establish a potential motive, though no suicide note was left behind.
"No suspects remain outstanding and the investigation shows that this was a murder-suicide, with a fire being started after the murders," said Capt.
Jake Sparks.
Amanda Karolkiewicz served as a substitute teacher at Grand Haven Area Public Schools, where officials previously honored her as a premier substitute at Peach Plains Elementary.
Following the incident, Superintendent Kristin Perkowski addressed the tragedy in a message sent to local families.
"Our hearts are with all those impacted, and we know many throughout our community may be grieving and struggling to process this news," said Kristin Perkowski.
School officials confirmed they are preparing counseling resources and crisis hotline services to support students and community members affected by the tragedy.
"Regardless of the details that may emerge, this is a devastating incident and a tragic loss for our community," said Kristin Perkowski.
"Our team is preparing to deploy support for those who may need it.
Although school is not currently in session, we will be ready to respond if and when additional information becomes available."
School leadership urged the public to refrain from unverified claims while the police investigation continues.
"We ask everyone to respect the privacy of those involved and avoid speculation or sharing information that has not been officially confirmed," said Kristin Perkowski.
"Please continue to care for yourselves and one another as our community processes this news together."
The parents of Amanda Karolkiewicz, Steve and Becky Lawwill, issued a statement mourning the loss of their daughter and grandchildren.
"Our daughter Mandy was a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students," said Steve and Becky Lawwill.
"We treasured every moment we had with her and her six children, and words cannot adequately express our devastation."
The grieving family requested space from the public and media while processing their grief.
"We pray for God's peace and comfort as we grieve their deaths and honor their lives," said Steve and Becky Lawwill.
"We ask that the media give our family space in the weeks and months ahead, and that they respect the privacy of all who loved Mandy and the children."
Molly Cessna, the sister of Amanda Karolkiewicz, expressed her grief and cautioned against spreading unverified stories online.
"Speculation is toxic, and anyone commenting theories about what might have happened is so painful — especially regarding the babies," wrote Molly Cessna.
"Keep the babies names out of this. Oh, our babies."
Cessna asked the public to wait for official findings from law enforcement rather than sharing speculation on social media.

We know what happened, and you will too." She expressed gratitude for the community support sent to her family during the tragic event.

Local religious institutions arranged public gatherings to support grieving residents.
"Over the past few days, our Grand Haven community has been deeply affected by the tragic loss of the Karolkiewicz family," stated St. Patrick's Parish, Grand Haven Church.
