LeBron James stated that a clear talent gap led to the Los Angeles Lakers' elimination by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals.

The four-time NBA champion made the remarks during an episode of his "Mind the Game" podcast released on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

The top-seeded Thunder swept the fourth-seeded Lakers in four games.

Oklahoma City also swept the regular-season series 4-0 and won three of the playoff games by double digits.

Los Angeles played the entire postseason without star guard Luka Doncic, who finished fourth in MVP voting and led the NBA in scoring.

Doncic was sidelined with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain.

James: 'We Were Out-Talented'

"I have the passion and the admiration to hoist a Larry O'Brien Trophy up every single year, but I also have a realization of what particular team I have been a part of in that particular year," James said.

James discussed the playoff run with co-host Steve Nash, noting that the team maximized its current roster's capabilities before falling to Oklahoma City's depth led by reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

"And understanding this year, we fought and we played to the maximum ability of our team. But ultimately, if we're being completely honest, we were out-talented," James said.

The Lakers forward rejected the notion that the roster lacked preparation or effort against the Thunder's deep rotation.

"We were not outworked, they didn't out-physical us, they didn't outsmart us," James said.
