Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez has opened up about the internal conflicts, managerial tensions, and personal hardships that shaped his European career, following the premiere of his Netflix documentary series on Thursday, May 21, 2026.
The 34-year-old, who currently plays for MLS club Minnesota United, detailed how language barriers, rigid training methods, and a painful family separation impacted his stints at Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Difficulties at Bayern Munich
Rodriguez moved from Real Madrid to Bayern Munich on a two-year loan deal worth 13 million euros between 2017 and 2019.
He initially thrived under Spanish-speaking managers Carlo Ancelotti and Jupp Heynckes, but faced difficulties when Niko Kovac took over in the summer of 2018.
“No era uno de sus favoritos,” Rodriguez said, explaining that his relationship with the Croatian coach quickly became complicated as he felt excluded from Kovac’s preferred group of players.
The midfielder admitted he did not put significant effort into learning German, finding the club’s language lessons uninspiring.
Friction also arose over Kovac’s physical conditioning requirements, which mandated the squad complete 30 minutes of stationary cycling after every training session.
Rodriguez recalled the favorable environment under his first two managers, saying “Suerte.”

Statistically, he accumulated 2,645 minutes, eight goals, and 14 assists as a frequent starter under Ancelotti and Heynckes, but his participation dropped to 1,654 minutes, seven goals, and six assists in his second season due to Kovac’s tactical choices and two prolonged injuries.
