Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour praised Ehlers after the victory. "He's a special talent," Brind'Amour said, "and it was on full display tonight."
The victory marked Brind'Amour's 100th postseason game behind the bench for the Hurricanes, a tenure beginning in the 2018-19 season.

Sebastian Aho and Jordan Staal have played in all 100 of those playoff games under his leadership.
Ehlers expressed excitement after securing the crucial victory.
"I can barely talk right now, but I was yelling pretty loudly after that OT winner," he said.
He detailed the strategy: "It was a great pass ...
and then just try to get some speed and get the puck off my stick as quick as possible and try to surprise the goalie."
Montreal head coach Martin St. Louis acknowledged Carolina's defensive pressure.
"It's hard to go 200 feet and produce offense unless you execute a little bit through that pressure," St. Louis said.
"I felt today we weren't terrible, we just weren't as good as Thursday."
Game 3 Action
In Game 3, Carolina took an early lead when defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere scored his first goal of the postseason with 11:36 remaining in the first period, assisted by Jankowski and Eric Robinson.
Montreal answered later in the period when Mike Matheson scored on a high glove-side slap shot off a pass from Ivan Demidov.
The Hurricanes recaptured the lead less than a minute later as K'Andre Miller assisted Taylor Hall for a 2-1 advantage, with Jackson Blake earning the secondary assist.
Montreal tied the game at 2-2 during a second-period power play when Lane Hutson scored off a give-and-go with Cole Caufield, capitalizing on a slashing penalty assessed to Jordan Martinook.
A potential go-ahead goal by Montreal in the third period was overturned after the Hurricanes successfully challenged the play for offsides with 12:01 remaining.
