Football analyst Johan Derksen has criticized the Netherlands national team players for their predictable and politically correct media appearances.

Speaking on the television program Vandaag Inside on June 11, 2026, Derksen said the lack of fan enthusiasm ahead of the World Cup stems from the squad's uninspiring personalities.

According to Derksen, the team's initial matches failed to generate excitement due to poor performances, damaging public confidence.

"Oranje has played two matches and both were unwatchable. You know how the public is: they have no confidence anymore," Derksen stated.

He contrasted the current squad with previous generations who had distinct personalities and gave engaging interviews.

"It also has to do with the fact that we don't have a single colorful player who says fun things in the media," Derksen said.

The analyst pointed to captain Virgil van Dijk as a prime example of overly cautious public relations.

"We have a captain who only states the obvious and is politically correct," Derksen added.

Co-analyst René van der Gijp expressed similar frustrations, highlighting defender Denzel Dumfries' response when asked about a major transfer opportunity.

"The press says to Denzel Dumfries: What a transfer, man. Then you can just say: Yes, amazing!"

van der Gijp said.

Van der Gijp argued that player responses have become too predictable, citing Dumfries deflecting the excitement by saying his focus remains on the tournament.

"He says: The focus is now on the World Cup. It's all terrible," van der Gijp remarked.

Derksen concluded that players have been so heavily trained for media appearances that all natural spontaneity has been erased.

"It seems like they have been brainwashed," Derksen asserted.

He reiterated that strict media management harms the connection between the team and its supporters.

"This is not media training, but brainwashing," Derksen concluded.
