Alex Pereira will attempt to capture a UFC title in a third division when he faces former interim champion Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight belt at UFC Freedom 250 on Sunday, June 14, 2026, in Washington.

The co-main event has generated intense debate as betting odds remain even between the two elite strikers.

Pereira recently reclaimed his light heavyweight crown from Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 320, while Gane holds a professional record of 13 wins and two losses.

Historical Implications

UFC commentator Daniel Cormier addressed the historical significance of the fight during Wednesday's media day, cautioning that a victory would not instantly make Pereira the greatest combat sports athlete ever.

“Alex just asked me that directly, and he's big now, so it's like, that's a hard question to answer in front of him when he's that big,” Cormier said.

The former dual-division champion said he told Pereira that further divisional dominance is required before overtaking historical icons.

“And I actually told him no. I told him that I don't think he would be the greatest just yet.

He would need to defend the championship at heavyweight,” Cormier said.

Cormier acknowledged the scale of the potential achievement but maintained that legendary resumes still hold superior standing.

“He's defended three times at light heavyweight, fought for that title a lot of times, and I think he just needs more work.

But I do believe being a three-division champion is one of the greatest accomplishments ever, but to put him over Georges St-Pierre or Khabib Nurmagomedov?
