Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa has announced his intention to retire from professional football after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, concluding a career that has spanned more than 20 years.

The veteran shot-stopper revealed his decision to the national team squad and head coach Javier Aguirre during a team dinner, just a week before the tournament began.

Team members described the moment as deeply emotional, with tears and embraces shared among the group.

The squad expressed a collective desire to perform well in the tournament for Ochoa.

Ochoa, who made history as the first goalkeeper to be selected for six World Cup squads, received a heartfelt video message from his daughter Lucciana while at the team training camp.

In her message, Lucciana acknowledged the personal sacrifices her father made throughout his career, including missed birthdays and time away from family due to training and travel.

She wrote that his dedication and perseverance have been an example for the family, regardless of results on the pitch.

She emphasized that for her, he is first and foremost her father.

Lucciana concluded by telling him that he is already a winner in their eyes, not just for football but for the person he is and the example he sets every day.

Following the reading of the letter, Ochoa reflected on his future, stating that he cannot imagine his career without the national team and sees no purpose in continuing to play after his time with El Tri ends.

Coach Javier Aguirre has promised Ochoa playing time during the tournament under favorable sporting circumstances, despite staff recommendations to maintain the current starting lineup.

Mexico is preparing for its next Group A match against South Korea on Thursday at 9:00 p.
