Mexico opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over South Africa at the Estadio Azteca. Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez scored the goals.
The Estadio Azteca also made history as the only stadium to host the opening match of three different World Cups, having done so in 1970 and 1986.
Expanded Tournament Format
The 2026 World Cup features an expanded 48-team format with 12 groups of four. A total of 104 matches will be played over 39 days.
The top two teams from each group, plus the eight best third-place finishers, advance to the knockout stage.

The final is scheduled for July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
International broadcast graphics use the code "KOR" for South Korea, representing its official name, the Republic of Korea.
Official guidelines state that neither South Korea nor North Korea uses regional terms in their official names, as both claim representation of the entire Korean Peninsula.
Other Group A matches include Switzerland securing top spot in Group B after a 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
