Actor Joe Manganiello has revealed that he secretly battled a severe, decade-long mystery illness that led to an organ amputation and a prolonged fight for survival.
The 49-year-old True Blood star disclosed the health crisis ahead of his upcoming memoir, Bloodlines, scheduled for release on October 13.

Manganiello explained that a cascade of autoimmune-related illnesses heavily impacted his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs, and digestive system, leaving doctors with few explanations.
“I suffered in silence battling a deadly mystery illness… Other than a very small circle of family and friends, I hid it from the rest of the world,” he shared.
Failed Treatments and Invasive Procedures
The actor noted that standard medical interventions failed to alleviate his condition and instead worsened his daily physical capabilities.
“I saw the best doctors in the world.
None of them could explain what started my illness, and all their attempts to treat it with high-powered biologic drugs only exacerbated my symptoms,” Manganiello said.

In an effort to manage the deteriorating condition, he underwent numerous invasive procedures that caused severe physical exhaustion.
“I underwent very serious operations and procedures that mutilated parts of my body and left me so weak at times I couldn’t stand up or walk,” he detailed.
The health crisis involved multiple near-death experiences, forcing the actor to seek answers through alternative healing practices, shamans, and ancestral history.
“Now, after three years of writing my memoir, Bloodlines is done… It documents my 10-year search for answers and spans the globe,” Manganiello stated.
He added that the challenging period ultimately provided him with a profound sense of personal transformation and perspective.
