The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issued a nationwide code orange weather alert on Saturday, June 27, 2026, as severe thunderstorms packing wind gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour moved across the country.

The storms displaced an unprecedented European heatwave that had brought record-breaking temperatures, including a historic 41.5 degrees Celsius peak in Germany.

The weather agency expanded the warning across all provinces until 4:00 a. m.

Sunday, forecasting heavy precipitation of up to 40 millimeters in short durations alongside large hail measuring 2 to 5 centimeters.

The severe weather caused widespread disruptions, forcing the evacuation of the TT Assen festival and causing a lightning strike that disabled a tram in Scheveningen.

Disgruntled attendees expressed frustration after the safety region canceled the Parkzicht Outdoor festival in Vlaardingen just two hours before its scheduled start.

"We are not made of sugar," said frustrated festivalgoers.

Public infrastructure faced separate complications as Rijkswaterstaat suffered a massive national fiber optic cable glitch that severely disrupted automated control over highway matrix signs, bridges, locks, and traffic cameras.

Officials advised boaters to exit waterways ahead of the storm.

"Where possible, switching to local operation will occur," stated Rijkswaterstaat.

The agency deployed technical specialists immediately but could not provide an immediate timeline for full network restoration.

"Our technical teams are prioritizing recovery, and there is no estimated end time yet," stated Rijkswaterstaat.

In Amsterdam, local weather warnings transitioned from a heat-related code red to a thunderstorm code orange as dark storm clouds and frequent lightning activity rapidly advanced over the capital city.
