Netflix continues to leave its critically acclaimed true-crime series Mindhunter on indefinite hold.

The decision stems from high production budgets and viewership metrics, despite sustained fan campaigns on social media platforms for its return.

The series, which followed real-life criminal profilers tracking serial killers, ran for two seasons between 2017 and 2019.

In early 2020, the streaming platform released the cast from their contracts.

Executive producer and director David Fincher originally paused production to focus on other projects.

This prompted an initial statement from Netflix regarding the suspension of the program.

"David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank, and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots," a Netflix representative told TVLine.

"He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own."

Fincher later addressed the financial realities of producing the show during an interview with Vulture.

"I think probably," Fincher replied when asked if Mindhunter was officially over.

"Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show.

We talked about 'Finish Mank and then see how you feel,' but I honestly don't think we're going to be able to do it for less than I did Season 2," he said.

"And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs."
