The Mercedes driver capitalized on a collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.

Russell adopted a modified driving approach at the Red Bull Ring, focusing entirely on tire management.

“I drove the race very different and quite abnormally, to be honest, to manage the tyres, and it worked quite well,” he explained.

His teammate Kimi Antonelli faced a more difficult weekend. He misidentified a single-waved yellow flag during Verstappen's crash, dropping him to fourth on the grid.

Uneven brake temperatures at the start added to his struggles.

“Just felt a bit tense, driving-wise,” Antonelli admitted.

Despite this, Red Bull team boss Laurent Mekies ranked Antonelli as having the fastest underlying pace ahead of Verstappen and Russell.

Red Bull's Upgrade and Ferrari's Struggles

Red Bull Racing brought a lighter RB22 upgrade package to Spielberg. The update aims to keep Verstappen competitive amid ongoing discussions about his long-term contract options through 2028.

Verstappen's management, led by Raymond Vermeulen, previously held exploratory talks with McLaren. However, they emphasized that their primary goal remains staying with a competitive Red Bull squad.

Ferrari endured a difficult weekend.

An engine upgrade failed to resolve straightline aerodynamic deployment deficits, leaving Lewis Hamilton and his teammate vulnerable on the straights.

McLaren also showed vulnerability on straightline speed.
