Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager John Chayka is navigating a delicate balance between immediate competitiveness and long-term rebuilding following the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.

The team made 10 selections during the draft weekend, including first overall pick Gavin McKenna, signaling a shift toward a younger roster.

Chayka increased salary cap flexibility to just over $22 million by trading veteran defenseman Brandon Carlo to the St. Louis Blues for two mid-round draft picks.

Free Agency and Roster Depth

“There are some needs we have.

We will be aggressive, but we will also make sure we are not doing anything to hurt the future,” Chayka said.

The club secured veteran defenseman Darren Raddysh through a sign-and-trade agreement with the Tampa Bay Lightning as an initial step in balancing the lineup.

“We created more flexibility today.

It’s a balance and we have to be disciplined to help the team short and long term,” Chayka added.

Management is evaluating internal prospects to fill open spots, potentially lowering the average roster age significantly for the upcoming season.

“We also feel like there are some players in our pipeline who are interesting as well,” Chayka said.

Goaltending and RFA Decisions

The goaltending situation remains a focal point. Chayka noted the team has an interesting goalie pipeline.

“Anthony Stolarz has been a top goalie, but health and durability have been the question,” he said, adding that the team will look to improve the position if possible.

Decisions regarding restricted free agents, including Emil Andrae, Nick Robertson, Jacob Quillan, and Mattias Maccelli, are still pending.

“No decisions there, but certainly retaining the rights is important,” Chayka said.

Coaching staff structures are also under review following reports surrounding assistant coach Mike Van Ryn.

Chayka said Van Ryn has done a good job and may remain with the organization in another role, but the decision ultimately lies with new coach Jim Hiller.

The incoming rookie class and prospects are scheduled to begin on-ice sessions shortly.
