German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed pride in the national soccer team following their elimination from the 2026 World Cup.
The team, coached by Julian Nagelsmann, was knocked out in the round of 32 after a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay on June 30, 2026.

The defeat marks Germany's third consecutive tournament failure to reach the final 16, following similar outcomes in 2018 and 2022.
Merz Highlights Team Spirit
In a social media post, Merz focused on the squad's determination rather than the result.
"Even if the exit hurts: what a game!" wrote the Chancellor.

He noted that the public remained supportive of the players despite the early departure.
"With your commitment and team spirit at this championship, you delighted our country. We are proud of you," Merz added.
Germany advanced from the group stage with wins over Curacao and Ivory Coast, and a harmless defeat to Ecuador, before falling to Paraguay in a 3-4 penalty shootout.

Unlike some political leaders who have reacted strongly to World Cup outcomes, Merz chose to commend the team's effort.
