The Netherlands national football team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup on June 30, 2026, after a round of 16 penalty shootout defeat to Morocco.
The early exit fell short of the squad's pre-tournament target to reach at least the semifinals, prompting Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) director Nigel de Jong to announce an immediate evaluation of the technical staff.

Emotional Aftermath
Speaking to broadcaster NOS, De Jong described the deep emotional impact of the sudden knockout on the entire delegation.
"We are all still highly emotional because we just lost the match against Morocco. So disappointment is the best word.
We have to process that in a good way together," said De Jong, KNVB Director of Top Football.
"We are going back to the hotel soon.
We will come together and must close it out properly, no matter how hard that is," he added.
When asked whether the elimination would have immediate consequences for head coach Ronald Koeman, De Jong pointed to scheduled procedural reviews.

"I think we made very clear agreements before the tournament. Especially when it comes to the position of the national coach and his technical staff.
We will evaluate the agreements after the tournament. We are now entering the evaluation phase," De Jong stated.
He emphasized the need to handle the squad's collective grief before making any premature declarations about the management's future.
"The most important thing is that we process the disappointment well.
When you walk into the dressing room and see the staff members and the players, emotions are high.
We are naturally disappointed that we have been eliminated so early here, even though we thought otherwise," De Jong added.
