New York Islanders captain Anders Lee has gained significant leverage in contract negotiations following recent NHL market movements.
The 35-year-old forward now sits atop the list of available unrestricted free agent forwards as the free agency period approaches.

Lee's rise to the top spot came after the Washington Capitals acquired Alex Tuch from the Buffalo Sabres and signed him to an eight-year contract extension.
That move, along with Bobby McMann coming off the board, left Lee as the premier veteran forward option on the open market.
According to TSN Hockey, Lee is now the top forward available when the UFA market opens at noon ET on Canada Day.
His combination of size, leadership, and scoring ability makes him an attractive target for teams seeking to bolster their forward depth.
Lee recorded 19 goals and 42 points in 82 games this past season while playing primarily in a middle-six role for the Islanders.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reported that discussions between the Islanders and Lee's representatives remain active.
However, indications suggest Lee will likely test the open market when free agency begins on Wednesday.
Islanders General Manager Mathieu Darche reiterated that timeline following the conclusion of the weekend draft.
Lee has spent his entire 14-year NHL career with the Islanders after being selected in the sixth round of the 2009 NHL Draft.
