Alex Eala has etched her name in Philippine tennis history by becoming the first Filipino player to win a Wimbledon singles match in the Open Era.
The 19-year-old defeated Mexico's Renata Zarazua 6-1, 6-2 on Wednesday at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club's Court 12.

This victory marks the first time a Filipino has achieved a singles win at Wimbledon since the Open Era began in 1968.
Before the Open Era, the late Felicisimo Ampon and Raymundo Dero had won singles matches at Wimbledon for the Philippines.
During the Open Era, Filipino player Treat Huey secured multiple tournament victories, but those were exclusively in men's doubles.

Eala's straight-sets win also served as redemption against Zarazua, who is currently ranked world No. 75.
Zarazua had previously defeated Eala in a three-set match during the 2024 W100 Cary Tennis Classic quarterfinals.
With this victory, Eala advances to the round of 64.

She will face either Serena Williams or Australia's Maya Joint in the second round.
