Extreme heat waves and severe flooding have forced multiple Canadian municipalities to cancel or alter scheduled Canada Day celebrations on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, due to mounting safety and logistical concerns.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued widespread heat warnings for northern and southwestern Ontario, where daytime temperatures were projected to reach 37 degrees Celsius with humidex values climbing into the mid-40s.

While Toronto activated its heat relief strategy with cooling spaces and mobile water trailers to keep events proceeding, areas north of the city canceled fireworks displays entirely to prevent potential wildfires amid dry conditions.

"Fireworks may seem harmless, but they can cause serious injuries, fires, and significant property damage when used improperly," said Ken McMullen, president of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs.

The association reported that more than 700 fire departments nationwide respond to fireworks misuse annually, a risk heightened by current environmental conditions.

The Township of Greater Madawaska enforced a Level 2 fire ban, suspending burn permits and canceling scheduled fireworks displays to protect public safety.

"The health and safety of our residents, visitors, volunteers, and staff is always our highest priority," the Township stated via social media.

"With the current weather conditions creating an increased risk of heat-related illness and wildfire, we feel this is the most responsible decision."

The municipality moved all other scheduled holiday activities indoors to mitigate the heat risks.

In northern Ontario, Sudbury officials issued alerts for severe thunderstorms, warning of potential wind gusts up to 110 kilometers per hour, large hail, and torrential rainfall through Wednesday.
