A massive elephant seal named Neil has been causing disruptions in southern Tasmanian towns, blocking traffic and damaging property.
The five-year-old marine mammal weighs around 1,000 kilograms and has become a local celebrity despite his antics.

Neil has bypassed barricades, crushed fences, and even bumped into a parked car during his stay on land.
Experts say this behavior is actually normal play-fighting for a seal his age.
Local Reactions to Neil's Visits
Tasman Council Mayor Rod Macdonald commented on the situation, noting Neil's size makes him a potential hazard.
"He's probably not the fastest mover, but if he runs into a car or decides to put his nose up on the bonnet, it's not going to be too good," Macdonald said.
He added that Neil has been a bit of a celebrity and continues to earn that status.
Tasmanian independent senator Jacqui Lambie observed Neil's unique ability to halt local traffic while remaining popular among residents.
Expert Insights on Neil's Behavior
Dr. Jane Younger, a seal expert from the University of Tasmania, explained that Neil's behavior is typical but amplified by his size.
"He's come back every year since he's been born, but he's bigger now," Younger said.
"He's like 1,000 kilos at this point, and he's obviously more capable of being a menace."
She added that adult male elephant seals can grow to between 2 and 3.5 tonnes.
While most Australian elephant seals live on Macquarie and Heard islands, Younger believes Neil's mother may have mistakenly ventured to Tasmania.
