According to Steglich, discussing colonial history remains a difficult public topic, calling it "geen sexy onderwerp" (not a sexy subject).

Flag-Raising in Hoorn

In Hoorn, Alderman Dennis Boutkan raised the Keti Koti flag for the first time in front of the city hall on July 1, 2026.

Boutkan acknowledged the ongoing societal impact of the colonial past.

"We zien de doorwerking van dit verleden nog iedere dag terug," he said.

The ceremony commenced with a traditional libation ritual to honor enslaved ancestors before Boutkan delivered his address.

Boutkan committed to expanding educational initiatives regarding historical freedom and equality within the municipality.

The official expressed hope that the remembrance day would become an enduring tradition for the community.
