Lloyds Banking Group has announced it will retire the Halifax brand after 173 years, moving all customer accounts to Lloyds over time.
The decision, confirmed on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, follows reports in May that the group was considering simplifying its brand portfolio.

Customers do not need to take any action and will be contacted directly about the changes, the bank said.
Transition Details
Physical branches will be affected throughout 2027, with Halifax locations either rebranding to Lloyds or merging with nearby Lloyds branches.
Jas Singh, Chief Executive of Consumer Relationships at Lloyds Banking Group, assured customers that account numbers, sort codes, and app design will remain the same.
"As Halifax changes to Lloyds, our Halifax customers will keep everything they know and love today – the same fantastic app design, the same friendly faces in our branches – even the same sort code and account number," Singh said.

He added that customers will also gain access to Lloyds' latest innovations and experiences.
No job cuts are expected from the transition.
Lloyds reaffirmed its commitment to the town of Halifax and the wider Yorkshire and Humber region, maintaining 3,000 staff at its Trinity Road office.

Deposit protections under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) will remain unaffected.
