If you haven't watched the second season of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender, you're not alone.

Season one debuted with 21.2 million views in its first four days in 2024, but season two managed only 8.7 million views — a 59% drop.

This isn't an isolated case. Netflix appears to be struggling across the board to retain viewers for returning shows.

Widespread Audience Drops

The first season of Tina Fey's relationship comedy The Four Seasons had 11.9 million views, but the second season fell to 4.4 million — a 63% decline.

Beef's second season opened with 2.4 million views, down 58% from season one.

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder posted an 80% drop in viewership for its second season.

Ted Danson's A Man on the Inside saw its second season fail to crack Netflix's top 10, making the drop difficult to estimate.

Some declines can be explained.

Beef is an anthology show with a new cast and story, essentially a different series sharing the same name.

But Danson and Fey are major draws with established fanbases, making their abandonment puzzling.

Release Strategy and Business Model

Long gaps between seasons are often blamed. If a show takes two or three years to return, catching up can feel like homework.

However, HBO shows with similar gaps don't suffer as much. The Last of Us gained 600,000 viewers between seasons despite a two-year hiatus.
