The 2026 FIFA World Cup has delivered immediate but uneven economic benefits to Vancouver as the tournament passed its halfway mark, according to British Columbia provincial officials and local business representatives on July 1, 2026.

While downtown restaurants and fan zones experienced massive surges in foot traffic and sales, local hotels and neighborhood retail shops outside the central core reported softer consumer demand than initially projected.

Restaurant and Bar Boom

British Columbia Tourism Minister Anne Kang reported that the tournament has driven immediate benefits to various sectors, noting that more than 330,000 people attended the FIFA Fan Festival in Vancouver between June 11 and 28.

"Right now people are packing local bars and restaurants, not just in Vancouver, but throughout British Columbia," Kang said.

The province stated that businesses near the Granville Street pedestrian zone saw match-day sales increases of up to 40 percent, while some pubs exceeded revenue targets by over 50 percent.

Ian Tostenson, president of the B. C.

Restaurant and Foodservices Association, confirmed that bars and pubs are experiencing a major boom, which accelerates significantly whenever the Canadian national team plays.

"We've heard of sales even doubled," Tostenson said.

Tostenson noted that establishments located on the fringes of the major event zones must implement special menus to attract the crowds.

Jane Talbot, CEO of the Downtown Business Improvement Association, described an incredibly positive atmosphere along the pedestrianized Granville Street corridor.

"The days that Canada plays, whether they're in town or they're somewhere else, it is electric down there," Talbot said.
