The United States men's national soccer team advanced to the World Cup round of 16 after a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Folarin Balogun opened the scoring in the first half, capitalizing on a deflected pass from Malik Tillman to slide the ball in with his left foot for his third goal of the tournament.

The American squad was reduced to 10 men in the 64th minute when Balogun received a red card for an unintentional but severe challenge on an opponent's ankle.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the United States extended its lead through Tillman, who converted a direct free kick into the net to secure the victory.

Bosnia and Herzegovina suffered a setback in the 50th minute when captain Edin Dzeko exited due to injury, ending the World Cup for the 40-year-old forward.

Manager Barbarez then made three simultaneous substitutions, introducing former Ajax player Tahirovic and PSV winger Esmir Bajraktarevic, who was born and raised in the United States.

Earlier in the match, the United States had two goals disallowed for offside after video reviews overturned a first-half strike by Balogun and a 78th-minute effort by Christian Pulisic.
