Prior to the statement, NHL insiders reported interest from other clubs, including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning, though Werenski holds a $9,583,334 salary cap hit.
The Blue Jackets finished their recent season with a 40-30-12 record, missing the playoffs for a sixth consecutive year after going 3-9-1 over their final 13 matches.

Werenski was originally selected eighth overall by Columbus in the 2015 NHL Draft and currently ranks second in franchise history with 465 career points.
