The Australian national football team is finalizing tactical adjustments ahead of their 2026 World Cup round of 32 knockout match against Egypt in Texas on Saturday.

Head coach Tony Popovic is evaluating his lineup options to counter the specific offensive strengths of the African nation, following a possession-dominant performance against Paraguay.

Defensive Focus Against Egypt's Attack

Defensive focus remains a priority for the Socceroos as they prepare to face an Egyptian attack that may feature a returning Mohamed Salah.

Opta metrics show Australia limited opponents to an expected goals-against value of 0.06 xG per shot during the group stage, ranking second in the tournament behind Spain.

Australian defender Alessandro Circati emphasized the concentration required to neutralize the threat posed by Egypt's forward line, which also includes Omar Marmoush and Trezeguet.

"You've got to stay attentive for the whole time that you're marking them, because they can make something out of nothing," said Circati.

Circati noted that minimizing errors is essential when facing opponents capable of capitalizing on minor defensive lapses.

"A half chance they can create into anything that they want.

It's really about being in control and being able to limit the things that they do and the chances they can create," he added.

Midfielder Ajdin Hrustic reinforced the team's commitment to maintaining defensive solidity despite his role in the creative engine room.

"As a creative kind of player, I still think that zero [a clean sheet] is the most important," said Hrustic.
