His business manager, Brian Edwards, confirmed that the country performer died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family and his rescue dog, after a week of declining health.

Edwards described the loss as heartbreaking but noted the peaceful nature of his departure. "When someone goes peacefully like that, it's kind of a blessing," he said.

Hunter's enduring legacy lies in his extensive television career and his connection with fans. "Those fans meant everything to him," Edwards added.

A Pioneering Career in Television

Born on March 20, 1937, Hunter learned guitar at age nine and performed locally before joining CBC-TV's "Country Hoedown" as a rhythm guitarist in his teens.

He later hosted a daily lunchtime radio program on CBC, blending country and pop music.

At age 28, he launched "The Tommy Hunter Show" on CBC, aiming to elevate country music beyond rural stereotypes.

The Gemini Award-winning program became North America's longest-running music show, also airing on the Nashville Network.

In a 2010 interview, Hunter recalled the early days of television when viewers had limited choices. "There was one network," he said.

"So they didn't have a lot of choice. The TV was either on or off."

Over 27 years, the variety show hosted legends like Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, and a young Shania Twain.
