He expressed optimism that the momentum would carry through the final weeks of the competition.

"People are going to come out and cheer on their teams," added Deacon.

The soccer craze extended to retail stores where demand for official merchandise drastically outpaced local supply.

Hansport co-owner Andrew Hansen reported that Team Canada jerseys completely sold out weeks ago due to advance supply requirements.

"We sold 36 Canada jerseys but we had to pre-order so far in advance but we easily could have sold another 75 to 100 jerseys of the red ones, because they say wear red at the games," said Hansen.

The customer base for the merchandise included many individuals who do not traditionally follow the sport.

"It's a lot of people that aren't normally into soccer that are buying them.

I'm still getting phone calls and we've been sold out of them for a few weeks," Hansen said.

Hansen noted that matches hosted in nearby Vancouver significantly amplified regional enthusiasm, which could lower financial barriers for youth sport participation.

"Having games in Vancouver has helped drive up interest," Hansen said.

The retailer expressed hope that the tournament would inspire a new generation of local soccer players.

"That's what's done it as everyone wants to be a part of it.

I would hope more kids are interested in trying to emulate their favourite players," Hansen said.

He noted that soccer remains highly accessible for families looking for budget-friendly athletic activities.
